Delaware Valley Young Musicians’ Orchestra
The Delaware Valley Young Musicians’ Orchestra has been in existence as part of the Delaware County Youth Orchestra Organization since the fall of 1989. The orchestra rehearses at Springton Lake Middle School's Band Room on Thursday evenings during the school year. The orchestra performs a mixture of classical arrangements and popular music at a high school level. There are two concerts each year in November and late April. All current players must re-audition in the spring for placement in the orchestra as well as new players interested in joining the orchestra for the next season.
Two conductors share the rehearsals and concert stage. A. Scott Kiehner has been the conductor of the orchestra since 1994. He is an instrumental and general music teacher in Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. Elizabeth Klinger, a retired string teacher in the Springfield School District with over thirty years of string teaching experience, has been our conductor since the 2007-2008 season. Mrs. Klinger is a violinist in the Lansdowne Symphony and a founding member of “A Touch of Class” string quartet. She has been a string coach for sectionals with this orchestra and PMEA string fest. She has guest conducted both the Reading Youth Orchestra and the Lansdowne Symphony. Before her retirement, Mrs. Klinger conducted the Springfield elementary string orchestra, the ET Richardson middle school orchestras, the Springfield High School string orchestra, and the Nether Providence High School Orchestra. She is a graduate of Temple University and has had conducting studies with Jerry Nowak at Villanova University and at the University of Miami. Her daughters have participated in both the Delaware Valley Young Musicians’ Orchestra and the Delaware County Youth Orchestra. Mrs. Klinger is also an accomplished viola player.
In the 2009-2010 season we have 85 performers in grades 5 through 12. Most are in 8th grade. They come from over 17 school districts. The greatest numbers are from Wallingford-Swarthmore School District followed by significant numbers of players from Springfield, Radnor, and Haverford School districts. Two conductors, A. Scott Kiehner and Elizabeth Klinger, work with the instrumentalists every Thursday evening at Springton Lake Middle School in Rose-Tree Media School District to prepare for the two Sunday concerts presented to parents, families, friends, and teachers.
