The Delaware County Youth Orchestra, celebrating its 38th season in 2009-2010, is a highly selective, full-size symphony orchestra of talented young musicians through senior year of high school. The orchestra rehearses in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania at Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 278 Bryn Mawr Avenue. Its mission is to provide young people of exceptional ability with the opportunity to learn and perform major works from the standard symphonic repertoire, and to teach them the skills and discipline of orchestral performance.
DCYO presents four concerts a year in locations throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. It has also participated in the Festival of Youth Orchestras in the U.S. and Canada. In recent years music director Brad Smith has included works of contemporary composers in the orchestra’s repertoire, most notably award-winning composer Jennifer Higdon’s tone poem blue cathedral, which DCYO performed in its May 2009 concerts. Earlier that spring DCYO had the privilege of rehearsing the piece with the composer, whose insights proved to be invaluable in terms of interpretation and perspective.

2010 Distinguished Artists Program:
“A Career in Music”

On April 6, 2010, DCYO was pleased to host the second in our annual Visiting Artists Programs. Entitled "A Career in Music," the event this year consisted of a panel of three professionals who answered student questions about their careers. Our distinguished panelists were Richard Amoroso, violinist in The Philadelphia Orchestra; Min-Young Kim, violinist in the Daedalus Quartet; and George Blood, audio engineer and owner of George Blood Audio. A large audience of students, parents, and board members enjoyed hearing their anecdotes, memories, and career advice.
